Why is STEGH creating an in-patient adult mental health program?
The hospital has been directed by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care to develop an adult mental health program to address the void in mental health services that will take place when Regional Mental Health St Thomas closes. By creating an adult mental health program at STEGH, long-standing mental health patient, services and expertise will stay in our community.

Why is the Emergency Department being re-developed?
The current is small, cramped and inadequate to meet the growing needs of emergency services in the community. It is also unable to meet the privacy and security needs that will be required with the addition of the mental health program. The redevelopment will double the size of the Emergency Department, provide more private patient areas, larger treatment rooms and improve staff work areas.
